About This Quote

After another long silence, bit by bit, realisation dawned upon Edmund and he became even paler than Hecate herself which was, in itself, a fantastic achievement. Adele's words have been used to describe many moments when life has seemed bleak and when it seems that there is no hope. In this instance, Edmund is faced with the difficult task of deciding whether or not to pursue the woman who has been his lover for so long. In order to do that, he must first deal with the fact that she is clearly in love with someone else.

The idea being that he can be fair in his decision if he remains silent and allows time to pass in a way that will allow him to come to a conclusion. However, it doesn't take long before he comes to realise that she is in fact in love with him. In this case, the idea of 'realisation' means something different from the everyday sense of the word.

In this instance, it means that Edmund has finally understood what it means to truly love someone.
